The land for the Columbus School was purchased on May 20, 1892. John and Elizabeth French sold for $25 to George Hanna, Taylor Harper, and Abram VanMater, comprising the Board of Education of Hedgesville District, a tract of land containing one acre lying on the west side of the North Mountain adjoining the lands of said John French. A two-room building was constructed and sat on a hill above the Allensville Church of the Brethren, formed in 1921.
The school continued to educate students until enrollment dropped below 20 students in 1945, and the school system began to consolidate schools. On April 25, 1946, the school building was sold. The land remained in limbo until the Allensville Church of the Brethren brought legal action to obtain the land for the use of the church. The building was razed in 1946.
